Drum Blog

Greetings!  I hope everyone is off to a great start with their music endeavours this Fall!  My teaching schedule has been very busy, and I have had lots of performances on the go as well.

I have enjoyed sharing some new transcriptions with students recently, some simpler than others, but there’s always much to be gained by learning any new material 😀. A couple of these transcriptions include, ‘Down Under’ by Men at Work, and also ‘Symphony of Destruction’ by the metal band, Megadeth.

I am preparing for a busy holiday season schedule of performances, in addition to an upcoming trio recording in March 2025.  Many of my upcoming events are private, but here are a few public events you can catch me at; Kristian Braathen Trio live at Frankies Jazz Club, Sunday November 24th 2024 November 24th, Kristian Braathen Trio at Frankie’s Jazz Club, 8pm-10:30pm, https://frankiesjazzclub.turntabletickets.com/; PK3 Jazz Trio live at Robson Square Ice Rink, 800 Robson Street, Saturday December 21st 2024, 6-9pm (FREE); I will be performing a beautiful selection of holiday music with ‘We 3 Queens’ at St Andrews Wesley United Church 1022 Nelson Street, Vancouver, 3-4pm.  This is an annual event, and it’s such an honour to be performing with these great musicians.  Admission by donation; PK3 Jazz Trio will be at Minami Japanese Restaurant swinging into the new year, 8pm-12am, Tuesday December 31st 2024.  Reservations are available at, https://minamirestaurant.com/

Last but not least, I would like to bring your attention to a great event coming up, the South Delta Drum Festival on Sunday November 17th.   This is a fantastic event featuring world class drummers from the Vancouver region and beyond, https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/6463677

I look forward to connecting with all of you soon!

Warm regards,

Greetings everyone!  I trust you are enjoying being back at school and getting involved in school bands and personal bands as well.  I have been busy organizing my Fall schedule, which is nearly full but a couple spaces still remain.

I for one have had a busy summer, with performances, personal development (practice and transcribing) in addition to some rest and local trips.  I always look forward to this time of year as it feels like a new beginning.

I will be sharing more again soon, and please find me on social media where I’ll be posting regular content on all things drum set.

Warm regards,

Kristian Braathen

Hello everyone!  Summer is upon us, I hope you are all able to get outside and enjoy some of the beautiful weather we are having.  This is always a time of year that gives us a chance to slow down a bit, enjoy time with family and friends and enjoy nature.  It’s also a time of year that kids are out of school, perhaps with free time on their hands?  I would like to invite anyone who is interested in learning drum set to take the opportunity to give it a try.  Also, perhaps you already play drums?  This would be a great time to dial up the practice time, while you may have extra time available.  Feel free to reach out and try a free introductory lesson.

Another item I’m looking forward to doing this summer is I will be starting a weekly free ‘Drum Hang’ on Zoom.  If this interests you, send me a quick email at kbraathen@telus.net and I can send you the link.  This will be geared to newer learners of all things drum kit, and will consist of a demonstration of different ideas and techniques by me, and a time for a Q&A as well.  I’ll be posting more details on this very soon.

All the best,

Kristian Braathen

May 23rd, 2024,

Greetings everyone!  I hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring weather.  I’ve been busy with some larger performances lately, and of course teaching!  I had the pleasure of being part of a concert at Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver last weekend, ‘Burstin’ With Broadway’.  There were 2 sold out performances which included 130 singers and a 6 piece band.

Upcoming I have many performances with both my jazz trio, PK3 Jazz Trio and ‘Undercover’, which is my top 40 band.  In addition I am preparing my summer teaching schedule which will include private lessons both I person and online, as well as a limited number of 5 day ‘Drum Intensives’.  These 5 day intensives will give the student an opportunity to take a deeper dive into drum set in 10 hours over 5 days.  This intensive will include; Technique, Drum Styles (Rock, Blues, Jazz, Latin etc), Reading, Improvisation as well as listening methods.  If you’re interested, please feel free to reach out!  kristianbraathendrums@gmail.com

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well, and enjoying the longer days and sunny weather.  Much has been happening since my last post.  I have been keeping busy building my online learning system, which will be launching in the coming weeks!  This new drum education course will be available soon, on ‘Teachable.com’.  Once things are all in place, I’ll be sharing some links to check out the content.

The past number of months I have also been spending time learning recording and film editing techniques, which will be useful in remote recording sessions, as well as sharing content on Youtube and other social media sites like Instagram, Facebook and others.

If you have any questions or areas that you would like me to feature on these lessons, please feel free to contact me!  kristianbraathendrums@gmail.com

Gigs have been returning on a decent uptick, I’m excited to be performing much more once again.  For upcoming performances, please check out my trio site, www.vancouverjazz.ca

That’s all for now, enjoy your music journey!

Cheers,

Kristian Braathen

Greetings everyone,

Welcome to my blog on everything drums!  I hope you are all enjoying music these days and the journey of music practice and creation.  I had a very busy lead up to the holiday season, both recording and performing with my trio (Miles Black and Steve Holy), in addition to my regular teaching schedule.

While not everything has been easy over the past couple years with everything related to Covid, it has presented a few great opportunities that I didn’t have previously.  One of which is the option to teach drums to a wider range of people on Zoom.  This has enabled me to expand my reach of teaching beyond my local area, to a wide range of people across the Lower Mainland, Canada and as far away as Singapore.

I have also had the wonderful opportunity to study with the world renown jazz drummer, Carl Allen.  With Carl based in New York City, it’s been an honour to gain new invites with regards to drums and music from my home in West Vancouver.

I look forward to preparing my next instalment on the drum blog.  Stay well everyone and happy practicing!
